A UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between champion Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou Functioned as If headliner.
The event also featured a UFC Light Heavyweight Championship bout between present champion Daniel Cormier and Volkan Oezdemir. 
A welterweight bout between The Ultimate Fighter: American Top Team vs. Blackzilians welterweight winner Kamaru Usman and Emil Weber Meek was originally scheduled for UFC 219. However, because of an alleged visa dilemma for Meek which influenced his travel program, the pairing was delayed and then rescheduled to this event.  But, it was shifted to UFC Fight Night: Stephens vs. Choi per day after, which took place six days prior to this event. 
A welterweight bout between Abdul Razak Alhassan and Sabah Homasi was initially scheduled for UFC 219, but later altered to this occasion. The pairing met earlier at UFC 218, when Alhassan acquired via a controversial TKO. 
Charles Rosa was expected to confront promotional newcomer Dan Ige at the occasion. But on December 22, Rosa pulled injury.  Ige remained on the card and faced fellow newcomer Julio Arce. 
Arnold Allen was anticipated to face The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 2 lightweight winner Enrique Barzola at the event. However, Allen was pulled from the fight on January 11 due to alleged visa problems which limited his ability to travel.  He was replaced by newcomer Matt Bessette that is promotional. 
Jamie Moyle was anticipated to face Maryna Moroz in the occasion. But, Moyle pulled out of the fight through the week leading up to case citing an undisclosed injury.  In turn, advertising officials indicated that Moroz will be rescheduled for a future event.
